Dr Liming Wang, Director of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland and Irish Institute for Chinese Studies at UCD received a very warm welcome from Gerry Breen, Lord Mayor of Dublin, when he visited him recently (Tuesday 2nd November) for discussions at the Mansion House in Dublin’s city centre.

Dr Wang briefed Mayor Breen on the activities and very ambitious plans of the Institute and the series of recent studies undertaken by the Institute.  In particular he discussed the demand for Mandarin language learning from schools and from businesses in Ireland.

Indicating that he would support having Mandarin teaching on the secondary school curriculum, Lord Mayor Breen told Dr Wang: “In terms of promoting and supporting your expertise, as far as I am concerned you are pushing an open door.”

The Lord Mayor went on to discuss his ambition to see a twinning project between Dublin and Beijing and told Dr Wang that the issue was on the agenda for a meeting he would be chairing with fellow Councillors on 25th November.  In the event that a majority of Councillors give their support, the issue would then progress to the agenda for the next formal meeting of the full Council on Monday 6th December.

The Lord Mayor also discussed his plan for developing Dublin’s Chinatown, an issue he set as among his priorities when he was appointed in June 2010.  Dr Wang briefed him on the success of the twinning arrangement between Liverpool in the United Kingdom and Shanghai.  And he told him of his role in the successful twinning of Belfast and Hefei, capital city of Anhui Province in China.

Finally, Dr Wang discussed with Lord Mayor Breen the Institute’s role in the extremely successful Chinese New Year gala performance at the National Concert Hall in Dublin every year.

The Lord Mayor talked of the city’s plans for the February 2011 New Year celebrations.  He said he wanted to make the celebrations the “most inclusive and successful to date.”

He said he was delighted to meet Dr Wang and he looked forward to deepening relationships between his office, the City Council and the Chinese community.

Thanks for sharing!
