The Presidents of Renmin & Peking Universities visiting UCD today were awarded honorary doctorates in recognition of the strengthened ties between the three universities.
Peking University and Renmin University of China (RUC) are both top-5 universities in the People’s Republic, a country which has nearly 2000 universities and colleges.
In June 2008, UCD honoured the presidents of these two universities with the conferring of Doctor of Laws degrees to Professor Xu Zhihong of Peking University and Professor Ji Baocheng of RUC.
Both presidents have donated books to The Institute. Professor Ji was accompanied by a delegation, paying a return visit to UCD following the UCD delegation visit to RUC in January 2007. RUC is the partner university of The Confucius Institute and a key partner of UCD in China, with a student exchange programme and academic links already in operation.
After the Conferring Ceremony, a Roundtable Discussion was held at The Quinn School of Business on ‘Current Economic and Social Development Issues in China and Ireland’. On the UCD side, the participants were Professors Rodney Thom, Aidan Kelly and Patrick Paul Walsh along with Mr. Paul Haran and Dr. Liming Wang, while the RUC delegation consisted of Professor Ji, President, Professor Hong Dayong, Dean of Teaching Affairs, Mr. Hou Shudong, Associate Director of the President’s Office, and Ms. Chen Xin, Section Chief for International Affairs at RUC’s International Office.
During the 3-day visit to Dublin, the delegation also visited The Smurfit School of Business, The Guinness Storehouse, Powerscourt Gardens, and Leinster House.
