On 17th October, 2018 H.E. Dr. Yue Xiaoyong, Chinese Ambassador to Ireland visited UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland (CII) and met with the CII staff. He was accompanied by his colleagues from the Chinese Embassy, including Mr. Pan Haoquan, Head of Consular Office, Mr. Zheng Dawei, First Secretary of the Education Section, and Mr Wei Yang of the Political and Press Section.

CII Director Dr. Liming Wang first spoke of the progress of the introduction of Chinese as a Leaving Cert subject and the challenges it faces: 1. a curriculum for Chinese teaching is urgently needed; 2. a shortage of qualified teachers. He also introduced the survey conducted by CII among 714 Irish post-primary schools about their demand for Chinese learning and their plan to launch the findings of the survey. Dr. Wang then talked about the comprehensive programmes that CII offers, which was followed by more detailed information from the staff in charge of each programme. Dr. Wang ended his speech by announcing CII’s plans for events and activities in celebrating the 40th anniversary of China-Ireland diplomatic ties.
Mr. Zheng Dawei spoke of the main themes of the China National Education Conference, discussed the nature and the future of CII.
