26 Irish teachers made their trip to China this year on 27th July 2014, making the group the biggest of local teacher training from Ireland. This is an intensive 2-week Chinese language and culture course in East China Normal University.
During their 2 weeks’ stay in China, these teachers were given emersion Chinese classes and practical workshops including calligraphy, paper-cutting, Chinese knotting and tea ceremony. Visiting famous attractions such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Yu Garden and Zhujiajiao also impressed the teachers with first-hand experience of Chinese culture.
UCD Confucius Institute established training projects for Irish teachers since 2010. By the end of 2012-13 school years, there were 56 teachers delivering the Chinese culture and language course independently. The figure shows that among the schools that have been running Chinese culture and language course, over 50% of them are relying on Irish local teachers, instead of teachers from China. The compatibility is making Irish teachers teaching Chinese a reality.
