The 7th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Secondary School Students in Ireland was held in Mayfield Community School in Cork on 29th March 2014. 42 contestants including eight students taught by the UCD Confucius Institute took part in the competition. The competition consists of a Chinese speech, Chinese talent show and a Chinese cultural knowledge test.
Eight contestants taught by the UCD CII talked about their own experience of learning Chinese: they broadened their horizons, made many friends through learning Chinese, fell in love with Chinese culture and much more. The audience was impressed with their fluent Chinese, humorous performances and accurate pronunciation. In the talent show, the students’ wonderful performances earned waves of applause. There were students playing Chinese songs using western musical instruments, singing Chinese songs, performing Chinese traditional dances and reading Chinese poetry.
One special prize, three third place prizes, two runner-up prizes and one first prize were awarded. Five out of the eight students from the UCD CII won prizes, including first prize, one runner-up prize, and two third prizes. The five students come from Blackrock College, Belvedere College and Loreto Secondary School Bray, three Confucius Classrooms set by the UCD CII. The winner will represent Irish Secondary School Students and participate in the World Chinese Bridge Contest in China.
The UCD CII organises Chinese courses in more than 60 secondary schools in Ireland, with about 5200 secondary students studying in the classes every year. The excellent results in the 7th Chinese Bridge Competition for Irish Secondary School Students reflects the dedication of the students in their study of Chinese and Chinese culture, and the achievements of the UCD CII in the promotion of Chinese language and culture in Irish secondary schools.
