Following the success of the first Irish local teacher training group to China last year, 43 Irish teachers made their trip to China this year on 4th August 2013, making the group the biggest of local teacher training from Ireland. This is an intensive 2-week Chinese language and culture course in East China Normal University, which is one of the top teacher training universities in China.
During their 2 weeks’ stay in China, these teachers were given emersion Chinese classes and practical workshops including calligraphy, paper-cutting and Chinese knotting. Visiting famous attractions such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, ERA acrobatics show and Zhujiajiao also impressed the teachers with fisrt-hand experience of Chinese culture.
UCD Confucius Institute established training projects for Irish teachers since 2010. By the end of 2012-13 school year, there were 56 teachers delivering the Chinese culture and language course independently. The figure shows that among the schools that have been running Chinese culture and language course, over 50% of them are relying on Irish local teachers, instead of teachers from China. The compatibility is making Irish teachers teaching Chinese a reality.
