Irish Secondary School Principals Return with Deeper Understanding from Fourth Trip to China Organised by UCD Confucius Institute

The fourth Irish Secondary School Principals Trip to China, organised by the UCD Confucius Institute, was successfully completed on the 2nd of November. During the 7 day visit to Beijing, 6 Irish principals visited the headquarters of the Confucius Institute and two prestigious Chinese schools - The high school affiliated to Renmin University and the No. 4 High School Beijing. The principals also toured around the Forbidden City, the Great Wall and the Temple of Heaven, as well as local Hutongs and the 798 Arts Centre. These attractions were chosen to showcase the best of both traditional and modern China.

First Winter Camp in China for Irish Secondary School Students Organised by UCD CII

On October 29th 2014, twenty students from Jesus & Mary College Goatstown finished their 8-day trip to China organised by the UCD CII, Renmin University of China and Hanban, the Confucius Institute Headquarters. During their trip, the students visited the headquarters of the Confucius Institute, RUC and the High School affiliated to Beijing Normal University. They also visited some places of interest such as the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City, the Great Wall and the Terra-Cotta Warriors and gained a unique insight into ancient Chinese culture through their experience.

On October 26th, 2014, accompanied by Irish Ambassador to China, H.E. Paul Kavanagh, President of UCD, Professor Andrew J Deeks, and Director of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland, Professor Liming Wang, Irish Minister for Education and Skills, Madam Jan O'Sullivan visited the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) and the Demonstration Centre of Chinese Culture of the Headquarters in Beijing. Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Madam Xu Lin and Deputy Chief Executive, Mr. Wang Yongli extended warm welcome to and met with the delegation.

10th Anniversary of Confucius Institutes Worldwide

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute worldwide, UCD CII held a unique celebration on Saturday September 27th, 2014 in Dublin, Ireland. About 500 students of the UCD CII participated in the Learning Outcomes Exhibition and performances which demonstrate the charm of Chinese culture. The celebration was also attended by some invited guests including H.E. Xu Jianguo, the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, Counsellor Zhang Shujing, Mr Alan Dixon, Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Region, Enterprise Ireland, Prof. Dermot Moran, President of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies and Mr. Gerry Breen, former Lord Mayor of Dublin.

UCD Confucius Institute organized 3rd Irish Local Teacher training in China

26 Irish teachers made their trip to China this year on 27th July 2014, making the group the biggest of local teacher training from Ireland. This is an intensive 2-week Chinese language and culture course in East China Normal University.

Sino-European Research Centre for Creative Economy launched in UCD

On 18th August 2014, UCD witnessed the opening ceremony of Inaugural International Conference on Creative Economics and the unveiling ceremony of Sino-European Research Centre for Creative Economy. H.E. Jianguo Xu, the Chinese Ambassador, and Dr. Brendan Halligan, Chairman of the Institute of International and European Affairs and Chairman of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, presented the ceremony and unveiled the plague. Representatives from the Irish businesses, government agencies, and academic institutions were invited to witness the exciting moment and interact with the delegation of entrepreneurs who came a long way from China.

2014 Joint Conference of New Confucius Institutes in Europe Held in UCD

From 15th to 17th June, the 2014 joint conference of newly-established Confucius Institutes in Europe, organised by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and hosted by the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland (CII), was held in University College Dublin. There were delegates from 48 newly-established Confucius Institutes in 21 countries in Europe. The theme of the conference was to share the experience of running the Confucius Institutes and promote their sustainable development. Based on the current status of the Confucius Institutes, the delegates discussed five topics including the planning of a “Confucius Institute Day”, fund raising from multiple sources, the implementation of “Confucius China Studies Programmes” in universities, the establishment of the rules and regulations of the Confucius Institute, and the promotion of Chinese Language Teaching into National Educational Systems

Liu Yunshan Attends the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony for the Model Confucius Building of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland

On 15th June 2014, Mr Liu Yunshan, a member of the Central Politburo Standing Committee of the CPC, attended the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony for the Model Confucius Building for the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland (CII). Madam Xu Lin, Director-General of Hanban and Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, and Mr. Ruairi Quinn, Minister for Education and Skills also attended the event. The ceremony was hosted by Professor Wang Liming, the director of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland.

 The Irish Final of the 13th International Chinese Bridge Competition for College Students

On the 26th of April 2014, sixteen Irish university students gathered at the Gresham Hotel, Dublin to compete in the Irish finals of the International Chinese Bridge Competition and battle it out for a chance to represent Ireland in the World Finals in China this summer. The students came from University College Dublin, University College Cork and Dublin Institute of Technology.

Winner of the ‘Chinese Bridge’ Chinese proficiency competition, taught through the UCD Confucius Institute, will go to China to represent Ireland in the World Finals!

The 7th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Secondary School Students in Ireland was held in Mayfield Community School in Cork on 29th March 2014. 42 contestants including eight students taught by the UCD Confucius Institute took part in the competition. The competition consists of a Chinese speech, Chinese talent show and a Chinese cultural knowledge test.
