Local Chinese Teacher Training by UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland

Local Chinese teacher training by UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland (CII) commenced on February 2nd, 2019. The objective of the training course was to increase Chinese language teaching (CLT) efficiency and performance and to improve methods of CLT promotion. It also aimed to train a cohort of high-qualified local teachers and build a local teacher reserve. Prof Liming Wang, Director of UCD CII and Prof Lianyi Song of the SOAS, University of London, addressed the teaching staff of CII and 26 local teachers.

Prof Wang said in his speech that UCD CII was highly experienced in organizing local teacher training with well-planned courses and popular enrolment. He stressed that the introduction of Chinese as a Leaving Certificate subject in 2020 would be a significant milestone for promoting Chinese language and culture in Ireland. He wished all the participating local teachers success in the training. Prof Wang said the combined skills of updating one’s teaching concepts, methodologies as well as CLT models would drive Ireland’s CLT to a new level. Prof Song delivered a lecture entitled Do all roads lead to Rome? Considering different approaches in CLT. The lecture was viewed as highly beneficial as the participating teachers felt it was informative and pragmatic.

The 10-week course will cover three main areas: the basics of modern Chinese, international CLT methodology and primary and secondary school CLT methodology. The training will focus on key points and difficult areas in class teaching. Fundamentals such as phonics, vocabulary, grammar and Chinese characters will be introduced based on case studies and lectures. Effective and efficient teaching methods and class management experience will also be shared at the training. In addition, participants will make four class teaching visits to gain a better understanding of applying theoretical knowledge to practice by observing experienced teachers’ class teaching.

Since its inception in 2006, UCD CII has organized a number of well-received local Chinese teacher training courses, and will carry on this dedication with more innovative training methods and enriched content. The Institute aims to incorporate training in local teachers’ career development and to make training the driving force for effective class teaching.
