On the 13th of March, 2016, organized by UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland in conjunction with the PingZone Table Tennis Club, the 5th Confucius Cup Table Tennis Tournament was successfully held and lasted one day. The contestants from China, Ireland, United States of America, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Poland, etc, a total of 48 competitors from 16 countries participated into this tournament.
On the occasion of the 5th anniversary, the contestants of this year stand out not only in terms of the diversity of nationalities, but also for their high level of professionalism. Apart from professional players, this tournament also attracted amateurs which included some of disabled players, elder and juvenile players as well as their parents. The outcomes of the fierce competitions were not decided until the last heated final among the majority of contestants. After a whole day’s intense matches, the Irish contestant Gavin Maguire and the Welsh contestant Charlotte Carey won the first place of the tournament and the women’s championship respectively. Professor Liming Wang, Director of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland, presented the prizes to winners.
Confucius Cup Table Tennis Tournament has provided a great platform for European players to communicate with peers. Furthermore, it contributes to developing the understanding and passions of Irish people to Table Tennis-China’s national sport.
