UCD Confucius Institute organized the Winter Camp for Irish Secondary School Students

Invited by Senior Chinese leader H.E. Liu Yunshan, organized by UCD Confucius Institute, Renmin University of China, and the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban), 39 Irish students from secondary school and 3 Irish teachers visited Beijing and participated into the two-week winter camp of exploring Chinese culture, running from 19th of October to 30th of October. 35 out of 39 students are from Teresian School, 3 of them are from Sutton Park School, and the other one is from Dundalk Grammer School. In cooperation with these three schools, UCD Confucius Institute has been delivering Chinese courses to their students.

UCD Confucius Institute Welcomed the Delegation from Fudan University

On October 10, 2015, UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland held the official launch of Confucius Classroom and the Open Day of Chinese Culture at Galway Education Centre. H.E. UCD Confucius Institute Welcomed the Delegation from Beijing Language and Culture University

On October 4, 2015, the delegation from Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) headed by Prof. Liu Wei, Vice President of BLCU, visited UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland.  A meeting was held in the Institute to explore possibilities of establishing links and cooperation in the areas such as Chinese language teaching, teacher training programme and degree programmes. On October 1, the UCD Confucius Institute in conjunction with the UCD Chinese Students and Scholars Association hosted the 28th ''Confucius Ph.D. Forum'' in Newman Building.Prof Liming Wang, Director of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland, and Dr Hongju He from School of Biosystems and Food Engineering, delivered inspiring lectures entitled ‘The Essence of a PhD – Tips to surviving and thriving in your PhD’ and ‘How to Get a PhD Degree with Outstanding Performances’ respectively. Celebrating the 2nd Confucius Institute Day and the 9th Anniversary of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland

On the occasion of the 9th anniversary of UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland, as well as the 11th anniversary of the establishment of the Confucius Institute worldwide, the 2nd Confucius Institute Day drew attentions of over 300 audiences in O’Reilly Hall at UCD on 26th of September. More than 200 students and staff of UCD Confucius Institute participated into the Learning Outcomes Exhibition and Performances by demonstrating outstanding works regarding their achievements of learning Chinese Language and Culture.

Professor Xu Jialu Visited UCD and Delivered a Public Lecture

On September 9, the delegation headed by Professor Xu Jialu, a famous linguist, social activist and former Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of National People’s Congress of China, visited University College Dublin and attended the Public Lecture Series organised by UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland. The public lecture, held in the Lynch Theatre in UCD Science Hub, attracted more than 200 staff, students as well as audiences from all walks of life in Ireland including H.E. Mr. Xu Jianguo, the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland. Professor Liming Wang, Director of the UCD Confucius Institute, chaired the lecture.

Training Programme for New Chinese Volunteer Teachers Held at UCD CII

On August 20, 2015, a new cohort of volunteer Chinese teachers arrived in Dublin.The UCD Confucius Institute organized a week-long training programme for the new teachers. Through the training, the teachers had their teaching mission clearly defined and also got a chance to familiarise with the teaching programmes run by the UCD Confucius Institute. Learning from experienced teachers, furthermore, the new teachers performed very well in their trial teaching practice.

China Folk Art Overseas Tour launched by UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland

The China Folk Art Overseas Tour was launched in Ireland, in UCD’s O’Reilly Hall, on May 22, 2015.  Co-hosted by UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland, the China Folk Artists Association and Sun Emerald Ireland, the opening leg of this international tour attracted more than 1,000 overseas Chinese and Irish fans. Renowned folk performers including crosstalk artists Jiang Kun and Dai Zhicheng, children’s show host ‘Sister’ Ju Ping and soprano Yin Xiumei delivered a fascinating and highly entertaining audio-visual feast. In attendance were the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Xu Jianguo and his wife Ms Ni Jun; UCD President Professor Andrew Deeks and his wife Dr Linda Deeks; as well as members of the local Chinese community.

The 14th 'Chinese Bridge' Chinese Proficiency Competition for Irish College Students a Resounding Success

On the 25th of April 2015, the UCD Confucius Institute hosted the Irish Regional Competition of the 14th ‘Chinese Bridge’ Chinese Proficiency Competition for Irish College Students in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dublin. More than twenty university student contestants from UCD, DIT, UCC and NUIM, participated in the competition. Also present at the competition were H.E.Mr. Xu Jianguo, the Chinese ambassador to Ireland; Prof. Andrew Deeks, the President of UCD; Mr. Wu Xiaochuang, First Secretary (education) in the Chinese Embassy of Ireland; Prof. Dorothy Kenny, Head of School in the School of Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies at DCU and finally, the Chinese directors of both Confucius Institutes in Ireland.

The UCD CI defends its Championship title in the 8th CHINESE BRIDGE Chinese Proficiency Competition for secondary school students in Ireland

On the 18th of April 2015, the Irish regional qualification competition of the 8th Chinese Bridge competition for Secondary school students was successfully held in the UCC Confucius Institute. This event attracted more than 40 Irish Secondary students as contestants. Among the attendees were Nicholas O’ Keeffe, Deputy Mayor of Cork, Patrick Ledwidge, Director of Service, Strategic Planning and Economic Development & Enterprise at Cork City Council, Yang Zhijun, First Secretary (Science and Technology) of the Chinese Embassy to Ireland, Huang Fei, First Secretary (Culture) of the Chinese Embassy to Ireland and Tony Walsh, Principal of Mayfield Community School. Chinese Directors of both Irish Confucius Institutes, UCC and UCD, also attended the competition.

UCD Confucius Institute held the first working meeting for Confucius Classrooms

In order to enhance the communication between the Confucius Institute and affiliated Confucius Classrooms, improve Chinese language and culture teaching as well as serve the local communities, UCD Confucius Institute hosted its first working meeting for Confucius Classrooms on 26th of March, 2016. The total of fifteen people, including directors and teacher representatives from UCD Confucius Institute, principles and coordinators in charge of the Confucius Classrooms, attended the meeting.

The 4th Confucius Cup Table Tennis Tournament held in Dublin

On the 8th of March 2015, the 4th Confucius Cup Table Tennis Tournament which lasted one day, was successfully completed. This tournament was organized by the Dundrum Table Tennis Club and sponsored by the UCD Confucius institute. There were about 60 participants from more than 10 countries which included China, Czech, Ireland, Poland and the UK.

Teachers of the UCD CII Attend 2015 Chinese New Year Celebration in UCD

The 18th of February, 2015 was the last day in the Chinese lunar calendar. It was the eve of the Chinese Spring Festival, the most important festival in traditional Chinese culture. In order to celebrate Chinese New Year for the nearly 600 Chinese students in UCD, the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland (CII), the Chinese Students and Scholars Association in UCD, the International office, the Film society and the International students society worked together to hold a celebration in the UCD Global Lounge.

The 2015 Irish Confucius Cup Go and Chinese Chess Congress

The 2015 Irish Confucius Cup – The 1st Chinese Chess and 4th Go Tournament took place over the weekend of February 7th – 8th in Dublin, which was jointly organised by the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland and the Go Association of Ireland. A record 75 players from 16 countries (Ireland, China, the UK, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Finland, Australia, South Korea etc.) participated in the tournament. Many distinguished guests also attended the event. They included His Excellency Mr. Xu Jianguo, the Chinese Ambassador to Ireland, Prof. Andrew Deeks, President of UCD, and his wife Dr. Linda Deeks, Ms. Hua Xueming, the Team Leader of the Chinese National Go Team, Ms. Guo Liping, Deputy Secretary General of the Chinese Chess Association of China, Mr. Jiang Chuan, World Champion of Chinese Chess, Mr. Huang Yizhong, Professional 7 Dan go player, Mr Rory Wales, the Chairman of the Irish Go Association, Prof. Wang Liming, Director of the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland and Prof. Cai Yongqiang, Chinese Director of the UCD CII.

Launch of the Expert Group Overseas Chinese Teachers Training Programme by the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland

On the 9th and 10th of January, the first Expert Group Overseas Chinese Teachers Training Programme was formally launched. This training session was organised by the Confucius Headquarters and the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland. More than 50 Chinese teachers participated in the training session. They came from the UCD Confucius Institute for Ireland and the Aihua Chinese School in Ireland, as well as from other teaching organizations. Mr. Wu Xiaochuang, First Secretary for the education section of the Chinese Embassy in Ireland, Prof. Wang Liming, Director of the UCD CI, Prof. Cai Yongqiang, Chinese Director of the UCD CI, and Ms. Ni Jun from School of Languages, Law and Social Science at DIT took part in the training session.

UCD Confucius Institute organised its first Chinese Exam Winter Camp

In order to motivate overseas students to study Chinese and to encourage them to take part in Chinese exams, the Confucius Institute headquarters (Hanban) has been organising Chinese Exam Winter Camp Programmes. The UCD Confucius Institute organised its first Chinese Exam Winter Camp, running from the 26th of December2014 to the 6th of January 2015. 8 students and teachers from Sutton Park School (an affiliated school of the UCD Confucius Institute) participated in this programme.

Volunteer Chinese Teachers from UCD CI Participate in the “Collaborative Teaching Experience Seminar” for CII

On the 29th of November 2014, a seminar themed “Collaborative Chinese Teaching Experience” was held in the O’Rahilly Building in University College Cork. This seminar was co-organised by the UCC Confucius Institute, the UCD Confucius Institute and the education section of the Chinese Embassy in Ireland. There were about 40 participants, including the directors from both Confucius Institutes, as well as accredited Chinese teachers and volunteer Chinese teachers.
